A nature scene with a focus on tree bark.

Ever since photography was first invented, nature has always been a subject that is near and dear to our hearts. Although we like to think of ourselves as sometimes separate from the natural world, with all its confusion and suddenness—things that are definitely not also present in the "human world," we say sarcastically—we cannot be extricated from it. We yearn for it, actually. We love to frame the natural world inside our cameras because we want to capture its beauty and its grandeur. The wonder of the natural world is often fleeting, and we want to remember it forever. As such, we capture these moments and these sceneries in photographs to preserve these moments in time. We want to share them with the world whenever we can, leaving an indelible mark of our connection with the world, saying ''We want to be here'' and, when the time ultimately comes, ''We were here.''

Hanging these pictures in frames adds a sense of worldliness and verisimilitude to spaces, like windows to the world outside. This grounds homes to the wider web of creation and reminds their inhabitants that the house they live in is simply another part of the greater world. And is this not the true value of photographs? As a clear reminder of our interconnectedness and our dependence upon each other and the world around us?
